Scandal, abuse and the darkest of secrets that lay hidden within the church
Karen Liebreich brings alive one of the darkest episodes in Catholic history. The parallels between the story she has uncovered and modernchild-abuse scandals in the Church are powerful, but Liebreich does not descend to polemic. Her precise scholarship and admirable narrative style combine to prove that instincts for concealment and hostility to victims have plagued the church for centuries. Fallen Order locates the origins of the Church's modern crisis over paeophilia in the very earliest manifestation of Catholic education. This is a superb work of historical detection. The Church deserves credit for permitting Liebreich access to the archives that allowed her to write it.
